You can apply for a student loan from the Icelandic Student Loan fund which is run by the state. You will be entitled to receive a loan from Menntasjóður when you start a program in higher education, as long as you fulfil the fund '́s requirements and finish at least 22 credits each semester. The amount you will receive from the Icelandic Student Loan fund depends on the factors in your private life, for example whether you live with your parents or in a rented apartment, if you have kids, etc.
You can get a loan from Menntasjóður námsmanna if:
- You have turned 18 years old.
- You have a residency permit and/or refugees status.
- You are not on a defaulters’ list.
Can you have a job income and still receive student loans?
When receiving support from Menntasjóður námsmanna, you are allowed to have a job, hence, have another income. However, there is a maximum amount of money you can additionally earn while receiving support from student loan fund.
+ Fees
Tuition fees vary between schools. Information on fees can be found on the respective school’s website. Public universities are free of charge, however you have to pay the registration fee which varies between schools. Private schools have a tuition fee which differs between schools.
Asylum seeker
Everyone can apply for a university in Iceland. Refugees and asylum seekers receive the same processing as other international applicants, regardless of status. You do not have to have a social security number (ís. kennitala) to apply nor do you have to have a residency permit. However, if you don’t have a social security number you cannot apply for a student loan at Menntasjóður.
